THE WAR GRAVES COMMISSION
Information from DENNIS HUCKERBY

It is from "The Great War" that the majority of the information relates to.  We are grateful to DENNIS HUCKERBY of Basinstoke  for taking the time  and trouble to obtain this information from The War Graves Commission and sending it on to us.
Dennis had first written to the commission for information on his Uncle, HARRY HUCKERBY who was a member of the Black Watch, he died in 1917. Dennis thought he would follow up and complete the project by recording the details of all war graves of HUCKERBY's that fell in the two wars.   He incidentally also checked for all the known variations of spelling of our surname but none

Private WILLIAM HUCKERBY  (Service Number 21704)
Regiment :  10th Battalion, The Sherwood Foresters.
Date and Place of Death :  7 July 1916, France, The Somme.
Memorial :  Thiepval Memorial, Pier 10, Face C, D  AWD 11A
Next of Kin :  None given
This is WILLIAM ALLAN HUCKERBY, the Grandfather of ROGER HUCKERBY of Chesterfield, so his next of kin, to receive the sad news, would have been his wife SARAH ANN.

Our second fatality below  is very interesting, we thought we recognised him because of the unusual name, but on checking our records we now find that we have two men named THOMAS CARTER HUCKERBY, one born in 1862 and this Thomas who would have been born in 1894.  The earlier Thomas Carter had a brother JOHN WILLIAM and it is possible that he named his son after his brother. We believe that J W Huckerby listed as next of kin is in fact JOHN WILLIAM HUCKERBY who died on 29th October 1898, possibly born in 1860 to JOHN HUCKERBY  and MARIA. John  William was a merchant and clerk of William Street, Newark, his estate of £419-4-0d  (a considerable amount in 1898)  was left  to  JANE ELIZABETH HUCKERBY and EDWARD

Our next fatality is the only one recorded in World War II. We’ve no other details, can any one recognise ERNEST as a relative?

We return to the Great War, we have few details of our next fatality. As he was of the Yorkshire and Lancashire Regiment perhaps A HUCKERBY could be a member of Dennis's family from BLACKBURN or from ROGERS line at DONCASTER.

We have more information about the next soldier that fell, but unfortunately we have yet been unable to trace his  ancestry

We must thank DENNIS once again for the information. One day we hope to find out a little more information about our battlefield heroes. Can you help us? We’d love to hear from you!
