When MaryLyn first began research into our family back in the early eighties there were hardly any index's, it took many hours to glean tiny scraps of information. Nowadays we have not only a wealth of info available in the local archive, we have the World Wide Web. The Internet is a marvellous tool for those of us researching our family history.
It only took about half an hour to extract the list below. According to records forty four men fought for their country in World War One and were awarded various medals. The details are recorded on a medal card at the National Archives Office at Kew just outside London.
I went on the government web site : http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/
Simply by typing in ‘Huckerby’ the computer came up with the list of names below. And it doesn’t end there. You can for a modest fee order a copy of the record online and at £3.50 it beats all the travelling! The ‘WO’ reference at the end of each entry below is to the section the record is stored.
If you recognise any of the names we’d love to hear from you, perhaps with a few details of the soldier or perhaps even a photograph.
Over 140,000 men served in the Sherwood Foresters in The Great War, 11409 of them did not return. Unfortunately six of them were Huckerby’s. Their details from The War Graves Commission were researched by Dennis Huckerby, click on Forces Connection above and choose that option from the menu. I have also included a link at the bottom of the page.
If you do want to order a medal record or perhaps do more research I have included a link to the site below. They really do a wealth of information. I even found a reference to a Mr de Huckerby going back to the middle ages!
Don’t forget that we love to hear from you and will help you where we can with family details even if you aren’t a genealogist.
